Động từ tell thường mang nghĩa nói, kể, thông báo hoặc truyền đạt thông tin cho ai đó.
Khác với say, động từ tell thường có tân ngữ chỉ người nghe.
Đây là một trong những động từ có rất nhiều collocations cố định mà người học IELTS nên ghi nhớ.

Đây là collocation phổ biến nhất với tell, mang nghĩa nói sự thật.
Đây là cụm từ rất thường gặp trong IELTS.

Mang nghĩa nói dối.
Đây là collocation đối lập với tell the truth.

Học collocations with tell thế nào để dùng hiệu quả hơn?
Với tell, mình thường khuyên học viên chia thành ba nhóm để dễ ghi nhớ.
Nhóm đầu tiên là kể hoặc truyền đạt thông tin, bao gồm tell the truth, tell a lie, tell a story, tell a joke, tell the news và tell somebody about something. Đây là những collocations cực kỳ phổ biến trong giao tiếp và IELTS Speaking.
Nhóm thứ hai là hướng dẫn hoặc yêu cầu, như tell somebody what to do, tell somebody to do something và tell somebody how to do something. Những cấu trúc này rất hữu ích khi kể lại trải nghiệm hoặc mô tả các mối quan hệ trong gia đình và công việc.
Nhóm cuối là nhận biết và phân biệt, bao gồm tell the difference, tell somebody apart, tell from và tell the time. Đây là những collocations người học thường bỏ qua nhưng lại xuất hiện khá nhiều trong tiếng Anh thực tế.
Trong quá trình giảng dạy tại Lớp IELTS Năng Khiếu ở Phường Rạch Dừa (Vũng Tàu), mình nhận thấy một trong những lỗi phổ biến nhất là học viên lẫn lộn giữa tell, say, speak và talk. Khi học theo collocations thay vì học từng từ riêng lẻ, các bạn sẽ dễ dàng chọn được động từ phù hợp trong từng ngữ cảnh và cải thiện đáng kể tiêu chí Lexical Resource. Với quy mô lớp nhỏ khoảng 5–7 học viên, việc sửa lỗi diễn đạt và luyện phản xạ sử dụng collocations cũng hiệu quả hơn nhiều.
Những lỗi thường gặp khi dùng tell
Đây là một động từ rất dễ gây nhầm lẫn.
Người bản ngữ nói:
- Tell the truth.
- Tell a story.
- Tell a joke.
- Tell somebody a secret.
- Tell the difference.
Nhưng lại nói:
- Say hello.
- Say goodbye.
- Say thank you.
- Speak English.
- Talk about a problem.
Ngoài ra, nhiều người học viết say me hoặc say somebody, trong khi cấu trúc tự nhiên là tell somebody something.

Tell là một trong những động từ quan trọng nhất đối với người học IELTS vì nó xuất hiện trong rất nhiều chủ đề từ gia đình, giáo dục đến công việc và xã hội. Việc nắm vững các collocations như tell the truth, tell a story, tell a joke, tell the difference hay tell somebody about something sẽ giúp bạn sử dụng tiếng Anh tự nhiên và linh hoạt hơn.
Một kinh nghiệm mình thường chia sẻ với học viên là đừng cố nhớ tell = nói. Hãy nhớ những cụm từ mà người bản ngữ thực sự sử dụng. Khi bạn quen với các collocations này, việc phân biệt tell, say, speak và talk sẽ trở nên dễ dàng hơn rất nhiều, đồng thời giúp bài IELTS Speaking và Writing có vốn từ phong phú, tự nhiên và đạt điểm cao hơn.
